In 1997, recording artist, author, and philanthropist Jewel founded Project Clean Water. The non-profit charity foundation is working to improve the quality of life for millions of people by helping to provide clean water on a global scale. The foundation targets villages around the world with clean water problems, and works with the communities to find sustainable solutions to provide them with safe drinking water. To date, Project Clean Water has helped more than 30 communities overcome their individual drinking water problems in 13 different countries, on five different continents.
“I’m very excited that Project Clean Water has formed a partnership with the Voss Foundation and Virgin Unite to help people in need,” says Jewel. “When I was homeless, I became ill and couldn’t afford to buy the bottled water I needed for my sick kidneys. I realized then that it was hard to get clean drinking water in the United States, and discovered it was a huge problem globally.”
Virgin Unite is the non-profit foundation of the Virgin Group. We unite people to tackle tough social and environmental problems in an entrepreneurial way. Our aim is to help revolutionize the way businesses and the social sector work together — driving business as a force for good. This is based on the belief that this is the only way we can tackle the scale and urgency of the challenges facing the world today. Virgin Unite’s overheads are covered by Sir Richard Branson and the Virgin Group, meaning that 100% of donations received go direct to the frontline where they are needed most.
“Virgin Unite has had the pleasure of working with Jewel for a number of years,” says Jean Oelwang, Virgin Unite CEO. “We’ve been impressed by her long commitment to getting clean water to communities all over the world and are excited by this wonderful partnership with the Voss Foundation. Virgin Unite will be working with both partners and the communities to look at entrepreneurial approaches to scale solutions to deliver the basic human right of clean water.”
The Voss Foundation is a non-profit organization established with a mission of raising awareness of the lack of access to clean water in Sub-Saharan Africa and facilitating improved access for communities in the region. The Voss Foundation aims to help meet communities’ water needs and then focus on the self-improvement of lives and communities once basic water needs are met. We have a particular interest in assisting women and girls who, relieved of the burden of fetching water, have time to devote to education and enterprise.
“The Voss Foundation is thrilled to have the support of Jewel, Project Clean Water, and Virgin Unite,” says Kara Gerson, Voss Foundation’s Executive Director. “Together we will be able to bring clean drinking water and all the associated health and societal benefits to so many more African communities. Access to clean water is literally vital to a productive and meaningful life.”
